Capt. J. V. Crawford, of Wiarton, was born in the County of Perth in 1855, of Irish parents, and removed to North Grey in 1866. His father was a farmer and at farming young Crawford continued until he was twenty-three years of age. His first sailing was on a tug in Lake Huron. In 1882 he purchased the tug Jennie Harper for towing on Georgian Bay. In 1885 he replaced her with a larger boat. In 1888 he purchased a second boat to assist. In 1891 was formed the Crawford Tug Co., with three tugs and equipment: the steamer Joe Milton,J. V Crawford, master; the tug A. Seaman,Wm. Tyson, master; the tug Agnes,Geo. Waugh, master.
