It is with great regret that we record the death, on December 2nd, 1984, of Edward N. Middleton, at his home in Kansas City, Missouri.

Ed was a member of the Toronto Marine Historical Society for many years, and was a strong supporter of our efforts. He served as one of the authors of Great Lakes Ships We Remember II, and in 1984 the Marine Historical Society of Detroit named him as its Marine Historian of the year. Unfortunately, Ed was not well enough to attend the presentation ceremony last April.

Above all, Ed Middleton was the supreme authority on the history of Lake Michigan passenger vessels. Although he lived far from the lakes, he spent his summers on Lake Michigan, and it was thus that his particular interest in the local steamers developed. He enjoyed corresponding with other historians and freely shared the wealth of information that he amassed.

We will miss Ed, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family.
