Package Freighters

Unlike the bulk canaller the package freighter is not likely to be immediately affected by the Seaway although it is essentially a common carrier and therefore subject to competition from newer and faster vessels. Most of these vessels operate scheduled and frequent services which would not warrant the use of larger vessels, frequent sailings being essential to compete with the railways. The removal, however, of the severe dimensional restrictions will enable much more efficient vessels to be built as replacements when the existing vessels are retired. This is not likely to take place for some time as most of the vessels now in service have several years of useful life left.
