With this issue, we begin our comprehensive lay-up report for the current winter. In last year's report (and the year before that), we commented upon the unusual pattern of lay-ups which developed on the Canadian side of the lakes, and the same situation has occurred once again. Primarily as a result of the late-season grain rush, an inordinate number of lakers are wintering at St. Lawrence River ports (and particularly at Montreal), while some lake harbours have much smaller winter fleets than might be expected.

The following major commercial vessels are laid up at TORONTO this winter:

BAYSHELL ENERCHEM LAKER T. R. McLAGAN

BIRCHGLEN ENGLISH RIVER METIS

CANADIAN HUNTER FUEL MARKETER (diving school) C.C.G.S. MONTMORENCY

CHICAGO TRIBUNE HOCHELAGA NIPIGON BAY

CONGAR JADRAN (restaurant) NORMAC (hull only)

EVA DESGAGNES MCASPHALT 201 (tank barge) STEPHEN B. ROMAN

STELLA DESGAGNES MCASPHALT 401 (tank barge)

In addition, the following other vessels are in port, some laid up for the winter, whilst others are operating regularly or intermittently:

ALGONQUIN QUEEN (Q.C.Y.C. ferry), JAMES AULD (research vessel), AURORA BOREALIS (excursion boat), BAGOTVILLE (tug), CAROLYN JO (tug), CHALLENGE (excursion sailing ship), COLINETTE (tug), CORNICHE (excursion boat), CAPT. M. B. DONNELLY (wrecking barge), DUCHESS V (tug), EMPIRE SANDY (excursion sailing ship), H.M.C.S. HAIDA (museum at Ontario Place), NED HANLAN II (tug), HIAWATHA (R.C.Y.C. ferry), WILLIAM INGLIS (Island ferry), JAGUAR II (excursion boat), KENNETH A. (tug), KWASIND (R.C.Y.C. ferry), LOIS T. (tug), WM. LYON MACKENZIE (firetug), MAPLE CITY (Island Airport ferry), MARIPOSA BELLE (excursion boat), SAM McBRIDE (Island ferry), NIAGARA (excursion boat), ONGIARA (Island ferry), PATHFINDER (sail training vessel), PLAYFAIR (do.), PROGRESS III (derrick barge), R.C.L. TUG 11 (tug), THOMAS RENNIE (Island ferry), WILLIAM REST (tug), STE. MARIE I (excursion boat), FRED SCANDRETT (tug), SHIP-SANDS (excursion boat), GLADYS M. SIMPSON (tour boat), HARVEY H. SIMPSON (do.), K. WAYNE SIMPSON (do.), MISS KIM SIMPSON (do.), MISS SHAWN SIMPSON (do.), TERRY S. (tug), T.H.C. 50 (derrick barge), TORONTONIAN (excursion boat), TRILLIUM (ferry/excursion steamer) and WINDMILL POINT (alternate Island Airport ferry).

We have made no effort to list all of the charter and tour boats now on Toronto Bay, and have named only the most prominent of them. So great has been the proliferation of charter boats in recent years that it is difficult to tell many of them from the hordes of private cruisers seen on the crowded waters of our harbour. As well, several small workboats, scows, tenders, etc., have been omitted from our list.

The following historic hulls may be seen in Toronto Bay and environs:

BLUEBELL - former ferry steamer, hull now lying derelict inside the tip of the Leslie Street Headland (Tommy Thompson Park).

DOUGLASS HOUGHTON - breakwater at Ontario Place.

RAPIDS QUEEN - breakwater at Queen City Yacht Club, Algonquin Island.

HOWARD L. SHAW - breakwater at Ontario Place.

VICTORIOUS - breakwater at Ontario Place. Pilothouse may still be seen resting near the lake shore east of Cherry Beach.
