Marine Disasters on the Western Lakes during 1869

MARINE DISASTERS OF 1869.

The season just closed has been far more disastrous to the lake shipping than any previous on record, and exceeding those of any other by 786. During the season, there were variously employed, on the whole chain of Lakes, 121 sidewheel steamers, 140 propellers, 247 tugs, 175 barks, 50 brigs, 904 schooners, and 223 scows, - making a grand total of craft, on the Western waters, of 1,860. Of this number, 188 had passed out of existence at the close of the season, with an aggregate loss of tonnage amounting to 83,920 tons. There was commissioned, during the season, 67 new vessels, with an aggregate tonnage amounting to 19,298 tons, - thus showing a decrease, for the year, of 14,627 tons. The number of vessels' sales which took place, amounts to somewhere near 335, so far as the records show. The following are the disasters above referred to, which occurred throughout the entire year, including those which were not enumerated and which transpired after the closing of our annual report of 1868:

December, 1868
1. Schooner H. C. Potter, cargo grain; got frozen in Saginaw Bay, and detained until Spring.
2. Schooner Comet, surrounded by ice in Saginaw Bay, and sunk on Charity Island; rescued; her cargo a total loss, and one life lost
3. Propeller City of Fremont, damaged her wheel in Milwaukee harbor.
4. Canal boat Rhodes, ashore near Point Abino, Lake Erie, got off.
5. Schooner Toledo, damaged by running against Milwaukee Pier.
6. Schooner Spy, damaged by running against Milwaukee pier.
7. Schooner Napoleon, in outfit near Manistee, Lake Michigan.
8. Schooner Jason Parker, met with a like disaster in same locality.
9. Schooner Toledo, damaged by heavy weather on Lake Michigan.
10. Tug Star burned at Saginaw; a total loss.
11. Scow Ahnepee, cargo shingles; ashore at Sheboygan; got off.
12. Schooner Union, capsized on Lake Michigan, and went ashore near Centreville; got off.
13. Propeller Forest Queen, sunk by ice off Clay Banks, Lake Erie, bound for Detroit; total loss.
14. Schooner A. P. Dutton, foundered in Lake Michigan; a total loss, with 4 lives.
15. Schooner Challenge, ashore at Pere Marquette, L. Michigan; got off and repaired.

January, 1869
16. Schooner Spy, cargo wheat sunk at entrance of Milwaukee harbor, got inside.
17. Propeller Nebraska, damaged by collision with bark Wells during a freshet at Buffalo.
18. Bark C. J. Wells, sustained slight damages by aforesaid collision.
19. Schooner Mercer, ashore near Lexington, Lake Huron, a total loss.
20. Ferry boat Argo, broke her shaft on Detroit River.

February.
21. Steamer R. N. Rice, sunk at her dock in Detroit by a feedpipe bursting.
22. Sailboat, name unknown, capsized in Maumee Bay.
23. Schooner Sardis Burchard, damaged by fire at Detroit

March.
24. Bark Menomonee, damaged in outfit on Lake Michigan, in a gale.
25. Schooner Helen Mar, damaged by fire at Allegan, L. Michigan.
26. Schooner Fawn, cargo of supplies; damaged in hull and cargo, off Muskegon, Lake Michigan.
27. Schooner Len Higby, damaged by ice off Pentwater, Lake Michigan.
28. Schooner Island, damaged while being launched at Manitowoc, Lake Michigan.
29. Schooner Guide, surrounded by ice 26 days, off St. Joseph's, L Michigan.
30. Canal boat Andy Johnson, swept out of Buffalo harbor by a freshet, total loss.
31. Tug Magnet, sunk by ice in Buffalo harbor; got up and repaired.

35. Scow Almyra, run foul of Milwaukee pier; lost bowsprit, jib-boom, and head gear.

47. Schooner Lavina, collided with schooner Booth, on Lake Michigan; damage slight.
48. Schooner Mary Booth; severe damages by aforesaid collision.
49. Tug H. P. Clinton, on Grassy Island, Detroit River; pulled off, damage slight.
50. Tug Margaret, broke her rudder during a gale at Racine, Lake Michigan.
51. Propeller Boscobel, broke from her moorings at Chicago; no damage.
52. Propeller Rocket, parted her chain at Green Bay, and drifted in the ice; rescued.
53. Schooner Excelsior, broke her fastenings by propeller Rocket, drifting foul of her.

55. Schooner J. S. Minor, on Stony Island Reef, got off with slight damage.
56. Schooner Dan Tindall, while being towed, fouled with schooner Middlesex, at Chicago.
57. Steamer Kalamazoo, sunk in St. Joseph's River; got up and repaired.
58. Propeller Truesdell, damaged her boiler flues on L. Michigan.
59. Scow Granville, on the bar at Bode's pier, Lake Michigan; got off, damage slight.
60. Steamer North West, cabin damaged by schooner Owasca, getting foul of her at Detroit
